Multiple Clipboards

Multiple clipboards are a built-in feature of Microsoft Visual Studio but access to them is available only by cycling a clipboard ring. With Visual Assist X, you have the option to see a traditional paste menu, instead of the clipboard ring, when you press Ctrl+Shift+V.

Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 users have only one clipboard. With Visual Assist X, users have multiple clipboards available with Ctrl+Shift+V.

Clipboards are listed in the order in which they were copied. Pasting from the menu moves that clipboard to the top of the list.

The second clipboard in each paste menu is highlighted by default. Use the regular paste command, Ctrl+V, to paste efficiently the most recent clipboard.

Options

Microsoft Visual Studio users enable an option in the Visual Assist X options dialog to make the paste menu appear instead of the clipboard ring. Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 users see the paste menu on Ctrl+Shift+V irrespective of the setting of the option.

For all IDEs, specify the number of clipboards to maintain. Reducing the number requires a restart of the IDE before the change takes effect.

Miscellaneous

Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 users can open the paste menu using a button in the default toolbar of Visual Assist X.

Clipboards are saved between instances of the IDE. If multiple instances are open, the clipboards of the last instance to exit are saved.

Accelerators are available in the paste menu.

Assign a different shortcut if you prefer to use one other than Ctrl+Shift+V.
